Jacob and Esau’s reunion in Parashat Vayishlach resolves a long conflict between brothers. Sibling conflict is a central metaphor in the Torah, as well as in many other great texts and societal narratives, because of the ways it expresses the pain of disagreement within a community and the hope that resolution is always possible. Martin Luther King evoked these ideas in his 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial.
